As the weather heats up in Malta, so does the cultural calendar. These are some of the best spring events in Malta to experience on your next trip

Spring is arguably Malta’s most charming season, but it’s also the most fleeting. Thanks to the archipelago’s central Mediterranean location, the passage between winter and summer weather is swift – blink and you’ll miss it. This is also a great time to take advantage of some of Malta’s most popular annual festivals. From sporting occasions such as the Tour Ta’ Malta to traditional Maltese festas like the Feast of St. Joseph and the highly anticipated Festa Frawli, follow us as we guide you through the best spring events in Malta.

FMVA Vintage Motors Festival

Malta isn’t all history, yachts and coastal views, cast your eyes over the roads and you’ll find the archipelago is awash with classic cars. In fact, there’s such as passion for motoring in Malta that there are several dedicated car clubs. Each year, Federazzjoni Maltija Vetturi Antiki (FMVA) hosts the FMVA Vintage Motors Festival, which brings clubs, owners and enthusiasts together for a weekend of parades, displays and special events.

Tour Ta' Malta

A major event in the annual European cycling schedule, Tour Ta’ Malta welcomes Maltese and international cycling teams to the islands for a competitive four-day, four-leg race. The route is not only beautiful, but also challenging, with this year’s 23rd edition garnering increasing attention from cycling fanatics, both participant and spectator.

The Feast of St. Joseph

The Maltese islands are known for their colourful festas and The Feast of St. Joseph (or Jum San Ġużepp, as it’s known locally) is one of the most popular. Taking place in the historic village of Rabat in Northern Malta, the religious celebration is a sight worth seeing. The streets and churches are strewn with colourful decorations and lights and there are dedicated parades and picnics arranged in honour of the saint.

Gaulitana: A Festival of Music

Gaulitana: A Festival of Music, hosted by the Gaulitana Choir, returns for its 11th edition this spring with a series of masterclasses, musicals and concerts. If you’re an opera aficionado, don’t miss a highlight performance of Gioachino Rossini’s masterpiece, Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) at Aurora Theatre on 22 to 24th April, with music from the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.

Festa Frawli

One of the best things about spring is the fruit it brings into season. If you look forward to fresh strawberries each year, don’t miss Malta’s annual strawberry festival, Festa Frawli. Guests can sample strawberry-based dishes and drinks, pick up fruits and jams to take home at the market, and watch traditional Maltese folk music performances.

Malta International Fireworks Festival

Malta has a centuries-old association with fireworks, so it’s no surprise that it’s home to an annual fireworks festival. But this is no ordinary fireworks display. An internationally renowned competition between Maltese and foreign pyrotechnic companies, fantastic displays are prepared to showcase their latest rockets as they compete for the coveted first place prize.

Malta International Grand Prix

One of the biggest shooting events of the year, the Malta International Grand Prix brings together the greatest local and international shooting talents. The Malta Shooting Sport Federation (MSSF) hosts a number of shotgun events where skeet, double trap and trap shooters compete at the MSSF Shooting Ranges in Bidnija Malta. Participants and observers are welcome.

Malta Fashion Week

For such a small island, Malta certainly turns heads. Fashion is one of the latest arts to emerge from the archipelago and the Mercedes-Benz Malta Fashion Week celebrates local up-and-coming and international designers. The annual event is a one-stop-shop for trend-setting shows, stylish parties and VIP events.
